Choosing Kind

The world is in a crazy state right now.

Borders are closed, shops are unable to keep up with demand, people are isolated, scared, terrified. Daily, we’re given new information and are trying to make sense of it all.

It’s been interesting to watch how people have reacted. Only a couple of months ago we got to see the best in people. The world rallied around Australia after the devastating bushfire season. Panic has caused some people to react and ignore what they know is right.

In such uncertain times, it can be hard to choose kind and to think of others. You’re nervous for your family and your own wellbeing, of course, but how about a minute to take stock of what do you have to be grateful for that others don’t?

Last night I went for a walk. Very quickly my mind starting to circle around everything going on, it’s a constant topic of conversation and is hard to cut out. So, I tried to change the tune towards everything I am grateful for at a time like this. I have a job and fantastic bosses who will continue to support me throughout this, I have a loving, supportive, kind partner. I have an incredible family and the best friends.

My partner and I have a beautiful home, with space to roam around if it gets to the point where we are isolated. We both have so many hobbies and creative endeavours that will help to keep our minds active and entertained. We have our health.

What a huge list of things to be grateful for, especially when you take a moment to reflect on the fact that so many people do not have these beautiful pleasures.

But it really puts into perspective, I am in a place where I can be of service. I can help. I can help the small businesses and small business owners that I love, I can help my neighbours by going to the supermarket if they’re unable. I can help my bosses ensure we have plenty of projects to work on and that we’re ready for a smooth opening when this lockdown finally ends.

I’m in a place where I can help, in big ways and small.

Self-care, care for those in my community and worldwide. We are all in this together.

Choose kind.
